TBT: Know Lipsett

January 29, 2015
Post Image

This TBT is devoted to garage and it’s abrupt and short-lived year in the spotlight.

Early in 2012, Disclosure was my first ear to garage and I become obsessed with the danceable quality, distinct bass lines and unique rhythms. The hunt for more garage-stylized artists was real, and the only place I could find them was overseas.

Coming across Ireland’s Lipsett mid 2012, his track “Know This” still stands out in my mind as one of the first tracks instigating the long line of producers utilizing 90s/early ’00 R&B samples. Sampling Cassie’s, “Must Be Love,” Lipsett’s transforms the tune into a complex weave of progressive and unexpected loopholes.

Goin' Up

January 27, 2015
Post Image

An anthem for the working class, Drake’s “Tuesday” track has not only infiltrated our mainstream airwaves 7/7 days of the week in the States, but it’s seeped its way across seas to those that “got no time to party on the weekend.”

Over in France, vocalist Echo links up with Parisian pal and producer, Akeda for a ladylike cover. Kinda choosay, I find the original a bit whiney- I don’t want to party with that dude any day of the week. On the other hand, I’d totally get down with Echo- I’ll “bring the juice, we ‘bout to get lit,” girl. The chicks cool and effortless vocals with Akeda’s chilled-out lovesauce trap make for an extremely well-balanced cover.

G Jones, The Up-And-Coming King of Nor Cal Low End

January 27, 2015
Post Image

Deriving inspiration from both his native Nor Cal roots and background as a dubstep producer, G Jones has created a unique hybrid style that fuses together Nor Cal hip-hop influences with a future bass, low-end emphasis. His style can best be described as a highly unique and forward-thinking electronic spin on Nor Cal beat culture, all highlighted with heavy amounts of bass. As an extremely talented producer and DJ, G Jones has successfully weeded out any and all bullshit to deliver only the rawest and realest forms of swag, no gimmicks necessary. His highly inspired attitude and ingenuity as an artist shines throughout all of his work; his sound is entirely effortless and understated, but is impossible to ignore or forget.

With the release of his latest mix, “New Beats 2015”, a 40 minute, 19 track mix featuring all unreleased original material, G Jones has managed to embody modest, yet powerful swag. Each one of the mix’s 19 tracks offers a unique and interesting perspective on one cohesive and uniform style. From its explosion of dynamic sounds and styles to its razor sharp transitions, “New Beats 2015″ serves as undeniable proof that G Jones has differentiated himself miles ahead of the pack, as he is quickly mastering and honing in on his very own, mature sound. Long story short, G Jones is the undisputed up-and-comer to watch out for.

Sherlock Exposed

January 27, 2015
Post Image

Frenchman, Sherlock AKA Sam Bassett, surely has discovered a way with the ladies- well, remixing the ladies that is.

Our first hear from Sherlock was his literally perfect remix of FKA Twigs’, “Water Me” and now, the probing producer shares his spin on another English songstress, Lapsley and her newest track, “Falling Short.”

You would never guess, Lady Lapsley is only 18 y/o when you hear the pipes she’s working with. She plays with the disparity of simultaneously having extremely full and airy vocals, leading to quite a fanciful voice. Sherlock’s playful edit of “Falling Short” brightens up the track allows the originally mellow and emotional tune to color way outside of the lines.

Sherlock’s pioneering sound already has us on our toes early on into the year.

Getting A View of Legend4ry

January 14, 2015
Post Image

London-based producer, Legend4ry just released his stellar second full-length album, A View of Me, through Dank ‘N’ Dirty Dubz record label. A View of Me boasts an array of solo productions filled with vibey organic sounds, gentle baselines, and free-flowing melodies, along with a notable collaboration with The Widdler and the debut of his new side-project, Deep Fellows.

Legend4ry explained that this new album is a reflection of everything that has gone on in his life, and that the songs featured on the album are the tracks he wrote to help him preserver through hard times while simultaneously capturing, in his own way, the good times. As a result, each song on this 8-track release can truly be felt coming from the soul.

Music lovers can download the album for free or buy the album through donation. All the money received through donations will go to Shelter UK to help the homeless and families in need in the United Kingdom.
