Our RnBae, Ekali

May 27, 2016
Post Image

Vancouver-based artist Ekali has only been producing electronic music for a few years now, but between accruing a lifelong musical resume filled with classical violin, guitar, bass and jazz and touring with the band Said The Whale for four years, Ekali has harnessed more than enough musical experience and knowledge to afford him his current, well deserved spot in the electronic music limelight. In 2014, Ekali was invited to Red Bull Music Academy’s 16th year alongside 29 other musicians who participated in lectures, workshops, and live performances across Tokyo. On top achieving this admirable feat as a budding artist, Ekali has also earned himself a place in the global electronic music collective, Flow-Fi, and Vancouver’s local Chapel Sound.

With a style that boasts warm atmospheres and conjures nostalgic emotion through textural layers, unique soundscapes and thoughtful melodies, Ekali shines as a vibrant up-and-comer in Canada’s thriving electronic music scene. Songs like his remix of Tinashe’s Drake cover, “Days in the West,” and an “in progress” EP with Sydney-based aywy. have earned Ekali thousands of plays and followers in an impressively short amount of time, offering the young producer enough affirmation and encouragement to continue exercising his boundless potential and vast musical ambitions.

Ekali will be migrating down south to grace the stage at SOhO on June 5th. Tickets for this 18+ event are available here, and be sure to RSVP and check out event details here.

Baauer Turns Our Music High

May 24, 2016
Post Image

Harry Bauer Rodrigues, a.k.a. Baauer, has been producing dance music since the tender age of 13, but it wasn’t until 2012 that this colossal trap artist officially exploded onto the dance music circuit with his debut on LuckyMe Records. His infectious, 808 infused production style first reached the masses with his three-track, 12-inch LuckyMe EP, entitled Dum Dum, and only continued to gain footing with thunderous, crunk hip-hop releases like “Infinite Daps” with RL Grime, and remixes of Flosstradamus’ “Rollup” and What So Not and RL Grime’s “Tell Me.” On top of this already exceptionally stellar musical resume, the brightest moment in Baauer’s career thus far came in 2013 when his viral track “Harlem Shake” debuted at number one on the Billboard charts and was later awarded Dance Song of the Year and EDM Song of the Year at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. His collaboration with legendary hip-hop acts Just Blaze and Jay Z, “Higher,” followed suit, making for a monumental year for Baauer. Since then, Baauer has only furthered his musical exploits with 2014’s five-track EP, ß, and most recently, the release of his full length studio album, Aa.

Baauer will grace the stage at EOS Lounge on Friday, June 3rd for an intimate and bass heavy performance. Tier 1 tickets for this 21+ event are already sold out, but Tier 2 and 3 tickets can be purchased here! And be sure to head to our Facebook event page to RSVP and check out details for the show.

"Get Down" To Jack Beats

May 11, 2016
Post Image

Trailblazing, London based house duo DJ Plus One & Beni G, a.k.a. Jack Beats, have spent the better part of a decade flipping the traditional 128, 4×4 sound on its head with the help of wonky, wobbly basslines, big breakdowns and edgy acapella cuts. Hailing from similar backgrounds in turntabilism as multi-award-winning DJs in their own rights, DJ Plus One & Beni G fuse together their highly nurtured and electrifying live technical skills with one-of-a-kind production perspectives to spearhead their bass heavy, floor-filling brand of British house music. Jack Beats’ plan of attack is as clear as it is impactful: taking the very best, most spectacularly effective pieces from a vast array of different musical genres, whether it be from a drum & bass breakbeat, hip-hop loop, dubstep bassline, old rave riff, or vintage house sample, and blending them together to curate an irrepressible sonic force that detonates dance floors on contact. Put simply: Jack Beats are making exactly the music they want to make and the world is flocking to them.

Jack Beats have graced many of the world’s most prestigious DJ booths and festivals including Coachella, Fuji Rocks, Glastonbury, EDC and Sonar, as well as released on labels such as OWSLA, Rinse, Night Bass and Columbia. And now, it is the pleasure of Music is Love and RedEye Presents to welcome Jack Beats to our very own hometown stage at EOS Lounge on Wednesday, May 18th. Grab tickets to witness the exhilarating, pacemaking stylings of Jack Beats live in action here, and check out the event page for more info!

Lucidity Countdown 2016: Week 4 – J Phlip

March 31, 2016
Post Image

Counting down the last days until “Crossroads” Lucidity can be stressful! Packing the right clothing for unpredictable weather, making sure your headlamps are ready to rock for hours, meal prep, crafting, getting those gifts ready… tis the season ya’ll!

To help you close up those loose ends and at least feel like you are prepared, we have a three simple tips to make your weekend fun, comfortable, and conscious.

First things first, weather. Santa Barbara is pretty temperate, but the nights can be surprisingly cold. Make sure to bring boots, plenty of socks, mittens and a warm hat or scarf to keep toasty throughout the night. Lucidity offers a Silent Disco for those of you who like to get groovy late night, but after about 2AM the temp drops significantly for the next few hours.

Next, water and food. Lucidity has water stations around the festival. Make sure to bring reusable water bottle to eliminate plastic bottle waste. Bring your own cups, bowls, plates, and silverware for grubbing- the food vendors encourage and appreciate this. Meal prep is an awesome way to cut back on food costs and ensure you are eating what you know your body needs.

Last, plan ahead for your camp’s trash situation. Trashcans are an easy way to localize camp trash and keep it contained. Large, pop-up laundry hampers work beautifully. Try to make signs for your recycling, trash, and compost so everyone is on the same page. If you smoke, bring an empty Altoid container to put those butts in.

Though brief, once you have the above points checked off your list, it’s pretty much smooth sailing with the promise of a good time from there on out.

Though some festival patrons are lucky enough to call Santa Barbara their home, others are commuting from all over CA. To kill the inevitable anxiety as we await our Lucid journey, we have been releasing a mix a week featuring artists from Music is Love’s Nomad’s Stage. Starting with San Francisco’s Sex Pixels, we have taken you to Utah with X&G, to central CA with LA’s with Wood Holly, and now back to the Bay with Queen Dirtybird, J.Phlip.

It is pretty safe to say that J.Phlip (AKA Jessica Phillippe) has secured the spot as everyone’s favorite house-loving princess, and if not, it’s probably because you haven’t been #blessed enough to see this superstar behind the decks. Snagging her first DJ rig at the tender age of 19, Illinois-born Phillippe started making a name for herself in Chicago. In 2008, J.Phlip signed with Dirtybird, often seen opening for heavy hitter Papa Claude. Driven and full of life, it wasn’t long before J.Phlip was traveling the world, residing in Berlin for a bit she acquired a fresh sound to bring back to the Bay. Coming back to the States at the perfect time, when Dirtybird was finally getting the recognition it deserved, worldwide.

J.Phlip’s sets are always ones to look out for. She plays off the environment creating a personal and rather intimate experience with her listeners. Whether that be breakbeat, tech-house, or the deepest shit you can find, this babe will not let you down, and will feed into your audio desires.

If J.Phlip is anything, it’s versatile, Jess just gets it. Her exclusive mix for “Crossroads” shows her range as an artist making you wonder, “How many tracks does she have in her library?!” A softer side of house, indie-inspired, enchanting, and fanciful, while still incorporating that funky bass you crave, transiting to worldly tech-house, gently picking up the tempo to soulful house. Easy listening, you can play this out wherever and whenever.

Alumni Weekend 2016 BBQ

March 29, 2016
Post Image

Santa Barbara’s annual, highly anticipated adult playground, a.k.a. the Alumni BBQ at EOS Lounge, is back in full force for UCSB’s 2016 Alumni weekend celebration on Saturday, April 30th. Complete with an outdoor stage showcasing nonstop world renowned musical talent, live art from local artists Chadillac Green, Gone Gallery and Martin Leyhe, specialty cocktails, BBQ-style drinking games like corn hole, beer pong, life sized Connect 4 and Jenga, eye wear demos by Fello Eyewear, and food provided by Mony’s Mexican food truck and 805 Boba, EOS is once again transforming its outdoor patio into a full fledged festivity under the sun.

This year’s outdoor gathering will coax Santa Barbara’s beautiful party people to move their feet and shake their hips to the musical stylings of globally beloved acts Just Blaze, Cut Snake and Wuki as well as local sets from alumni residents Tyler Robinson, T-Fresh, Convex, Don P, The One Timers and Zeek Beats. While hip hop’s Just Blaze has left a permanent mark in the music world by lending his refined production talents to huge names like Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Rick Ross and Baauer, Cut Snake chooses to bring a different kind of heat with their unabashed, fuck-all attitude that translates to their lush, atmospheric and deep-leaning sound suited for any and every environment. Wuki, on the other hand, uses his trademarked genre-blending musical perspective influenced by the sounds of Detroit ghettotech and Chicago footwork scenes to seamlessly deliver booty, breaks, electro, and house into hard-hitting club-shakers.

Those who caught wind of the initial launch of this year’s Alumni BBQ lineup announcement have been anticipating the irreplaceably uplifting and beloved stylings of Pumpkin at this year’s gathering, however, due to inexplicably tragic events, Pumpkin, a.k.a. Nicholas Alvarado, unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, March 26th. With his passing, our community has experienced a loss of epic proportions, as Nicholas radiated as a highly influential champion of music, passion and a collective, conscious togetherness. Pumpkin’s music emanated with the unfathomably intense power of bringing everyone together in a fervor of true bliss and both outward and inward acceptance. Those who had the pleasure of experiencing his brilliant, exuberant energy firsthand carry with them the permanent blessing of his insurmountably splendent influences for the rest of their lives.

We will pay tribute to the truly inspirational life of Nicholas Alvarado at this year’s Alumni BBQ to honor the loss of our dear friend.

Tickets for Music is Love and RedEye Presents 2016’s Alumni BBQ at EOS Lounge Saturday, April 30th from 2:00 to 8:30 pm can be purchased here, and be sure to grab tickets for the BBQ’s Pre Party on Thursday, April 28th featuring Sleepy Tom and Dr. Fresch.

Crunch time music lovers! In just a couple weeks, we will be pitching our tents and making a temporary home under the coastal Santa Barbara sky blanket for a weekend of dancing, loving, sharing, and creating.

For all you just about an hour away in La La Land, we have one of your very own, Wood Holly for this week’s promo mix. In addition, Holly is a member to the Perfect Driver label. Based in LA, Perfect Driver is an exiting new label focusing on nu bass house from talent world wide.

In this week’s mix, you can expect a trip from deep house to West Coast bass-forward house to the transcendental sounds of Berlin inspired tech, Holly is all about that dark, sexy, full-bodied house music.

March 14, 2016
Post Image

Three weeks out until Crossroads! Our family is so excited to share another collective and transformational experience with friends old and new.

Will this be your first Lucidity? Or are you on your 5th chapter? Whatever your Lucid experience may be, you can enter Crossroads knowing that you are going to have an enlightening and magical experience. Lucidity caters to all artists, whether you are there for dance, healing, visual art, or food, aside from the music, this festival is extremely personal and allows you to tap into an artistic area that may interest you, furthering your personal skill-set and/or knowledge.

As for the music, Lucidity boasts a wide arrange of genres and vibes. Weather your an early morning hooper looking for live music to greet the day, or a late night groover itching for some silent disco to keep you up all night, you will find something that is perfect for you.

This week, we are taking our promo series from West Coast tech-house brought to you by Sex Pixels in San Francisco, to electro-trap future bass brought to you by duo X&G (Xian & Gaszia) from Salt Lake City.

Featured on Music is Love previously, member, Christian (Xian) spent the beginning of his music career in Santa Barbara. Upon moving to SLC, Christian met Aaron (Gaszia) under shared record label “Damn Son!”. The duo shares a common love for experimental soundscapes and a desire to stand out in a scene where artists can easily become stagnant or copycats.

Perfect for the inevitable tiredness we are all feeling from Daylight Savings, this one will wake you the f*ck up! We are excited to have Xian back in Santa Barbara and we welcome Gaszia to Nomad’s Stage!

Lucidity Countdown 2016: Week 1 – Sex Pixels

March 7, 2016
Post Image

Time to tell your mom you’re off “camping”, festival season is creeping up on us quickly, and we couldn’t be happier!

We invite you to Lucidity’s 5th chapter in their ongoing 6-part saga. Initiating our collective journey with Awake In Your Dreams, the first chapter introduced awareness and self-discovery. Following, “Totem’s Return, encouraged it’s patrons to delve into themselves a little deeper, finding our totem, our personal strength, and self-confidence. Once we had focused on healing and understanding ourselves, the third chapter reveles itself, Universe. Here is where we realized that it is all in the same, we are all one, we are everything, everything is us. This recognition does not come without the initial chapters, reminding us to love ourselves before we can fully be whole-heartedly accepting and completely free. Next, Kindred Quest brought us from the Universe, back to Mother Earth, grounding us, reminding us, not only that we are not going through this life-thing solo, but that our actions and words affect those around us. While the journey feels subjective, it’s ultimately objective, a collective. In Kindred Quest the importance of tribe, family, friends, community- whatever you want to call it- comes into focus.

This year Lucidity’s chapter arguably mirrors the current state of our nation. Entitled Crossroads, this chapter is where you are tested. A combination of cleaning out and planning, “Crossroads” challenges you to focus on what strengthens you and your soul and what doesn’t, encouraging you to rid yourself of anything that doesn’t benefit not only you, but your tribe. It is not an easy chapter, but possibly one of the most important.

Only a few weeks before we embark on this extremely important chapter together and we need music, right?! To help initiate the intent you plan to set for this festival, we will be promoting four artists performing at Music is Love’s curated stage, Nomad’s Nook during this year’s adventure, Crossroads.

Our first mix of this year’s promo series features San Francisco DJ duo, Sex Pixels. We are excited to begin our series with a wildcard, dare we say “crossroad”? House or big-bass trap: what are these bay babes going to whip up for you? Generally when you seek out a DJ, you know what you are doing to get, they are a dubstep DJ, a techno DJ, an electro DJ… they all seem to maintain their “place”. Not these boys, they truly love all forms of music, which, as a listener is not only exciting, but reassuring as their broad spectrum of taste enables them to successfully put together sets that completely capture the moment.

Comprised of bay area locals, Tyler Tan and Brendan Trudell, the duo claims they don’t have a favorite genre, and it definitely shows at events like Burning Man where you can find them playing chilled out daytime house at Pink Mammoth, or a 3Am trap heavy set at  Basshenge. Put simply these two are “equal opportunity” employers when it comes to the music game, truly promoting what we are all about- Music is Love, all of it!

Going on to play their 4th Lucidity, the Pixels have been impressing us with their West Coast inspired house sets featuring deep, booty-bumping tech house that’s as fun to dance as it is to listen to. No clue what they will be playing at their set at this year’s Lucidity, but as for now, we have a their set from last year at Nomad’s Stage to get your brain noodle into fest gear.

*Montez – Call My Name (Mankinde Remix)
*Trent Cantrell – Any Way I Want
*Rudimental – Right Here (Hot Since 82 Remix)
*Wehbba – Machines
*Shingo Nakamura vs Jody Wisternoff & James Grant – Another Tone
*Sammy W, Alex E, Dubfound – Inamorato (Nikitin Remix)
*Sirus Hood & Still Boyz – Jango (Original Mix)
*Intermodal – Mr Business (Original Mix)

Party With A Pixie

February 29, 2016
Post Image

Mija, the Spanish term of endearment meaning “my girl” gives off an air of cuteness for a DJ that throws down some of the heaviest tracks we have heard. Adorable and small, but her appearance doesn’t denote anything of her DJ or production style- quite the opposite really…

Raised in Arizona, Amber Giles AKA Mija dipped her toes into the industry as a local DJ and promoter. Not necessarily a big music state, Giles didn’t receive her big break until she was thousands of miles away in TN at an annual music festival called Bonnaroo. There, Mija was approached by Skrillex, asking if she wanted to go back-to-back with him.

Flash-forward a few years, and Mija is LA-based and still working closely with her B2B bud, Skrillex and his Major Lazer partner, Diplo- lucky gal!

Mija, much like her mentors, enjoys putting out big bass, electro-forward tunes and remixes, with a fondness for hip-hop, rap, and trap. With two of the world’s most renown DJ’s teaching her along the way, the future looks bright for this teal haired fairy.

Want to dance with one of the cutest DJ’s to hit the scene? With Giles on the deck, you will be sure to be partying until the morning. Catch Mija March 9th at SOho in Santa Barbara.
