Lucidity Countdown 2015: Week 1 – Pumpkin

March 13, 2015
Post Image

To our excitement, Lucidity is quickly approaching as one of the first festivals of the season, but there is no reason or room for panic! Music is Love is here to help countdown your last days in the real world before you call Live Oak your home for the weekend. Much like last year, Music is Love has invited four artists to prepare their own promotional mix for Lucidity. We will be releasing a mix every week for a month until we are all together in beautiful Santa Barbara. Our first promo mix showcases Pumpkin and his uncanny ability to bring together music lovers from all areas with his “new familiar” sound.

Upon first listen, you will understand that Pumpkin’s sound is synonymous for magic. Think about it- the only time you see swarms of festival goers diverting from their “choice” stage, is during a Pumpkin set. Here is one of the rare locations where we can whiteness house heads, bass enthusiasts, and live music lovers not only coming together, but dancing together. Pumpkin sets have one mission: to make you feel good- really good, and with gratitude we can say that we have never felt any other way before, during, and after.

Personally witnessing Pumpkin’s first show through The Do Lab 4 years ago, he has quickly established himself as not only a favorite DJ to the Do Lab as an organization, but also a choice performer for California transformative festivals throughout the year. Pumpkin, AKA Nick Alvarado, is the guy that was showing you all the coolest bands in high school. The dude who had that new-new on lock. Your first friend digging for music on blogs. The guy you were constantly nagging for mixes. Just so, Pumpkin has some of those most uplifting, fun, and positive jams on lock, never passing up an opportunity to show off some of the best remixes to your favorite indie, rock, hip-hop, funk, and folk tracks. Although Pumpkin’s name is extremely well-known in our festival community, he maintains an image as an underground artist by keeping a relatively low profile. A love for the underground combined with his bank of current and past crowd-pleasing tunes curates a sound that anyone will not only appreciate, but enjoy.

Catch Pumpkin at the Nomads stage, Saturday at 6PM for a special sunset set, and grab tickets for Lucidity 2015 “Kindred Quest” here!

Steady Gaze On Manic Focus

March 10, 2015

We find that adding a little soul is extremely important, but let’s be honest, blues can really bum you out. With how privileged we are in the 21st century, soul and blues seem to be confined to a despondent time period reminding us of an unprogressive and backwards nation. Luckily we have John McCarten AKA Manic Focus to demonstrate the genre in a modern and positive way, allowing those of us who weren’t born in the 50’s to enjoy the extremely emotional creative outlet in an uplifting way.

The Chicago-based producer showcases electro-soul and glitch funk around the perfect mixing of post dubstep, hip-hop and r&b. If you like his remix of Krooked Drivers’ “Nothing Is Lonely,” make sure to check out his SoundCloud where he offers some really funky originals and remixes for free.

The Last Of The Millenials

March 3, 2015

Tapping into the art of production mid-2013, Long Beach resident and junior in high school (yes, you read that right), has proven that his work is anything but what his name suggests, “Cavalier.”

With his first show last November, the kid is on his way to aligning with some of the biggest names in trap for 2015. It’s fascinating to see how kids who grew-up with the Internet at their fingertips are approaching art, production, and personal business endeavors at an extremely young age; but it may also be his age as the reason to why the kid wishes to remain relatively under-the-radar.

We are finally moving towards an age where talent is talent, no matter the source, and the Internet has allowed for these creatives to not only share their work, but has provided a platform for them to properly network and market themselves. Cavalier demonstrates how easy it is to form business relationships via communicating primarily through the Interwebs, mentioning that’s how he has been able to reach out and collaborate with other producers despite 6th period bells closing up his current reality.

“Wet behind the ears,” “too young,” “no resume,” – that shit doesn’t matter anymore as much as it pains us older kids to hear; the Internet is now your resume whether you like it or not. Dreams of staying cavalier by working as a producer/ghostwriter for big artists may be out of the question for this impressive young producer.

Feeling bossy? So are we:

Gathering quite the following in only a few short years, rapper GoldLink’s fluid and poetic flow has grasped the attention of some of today’s newest and hottest producers.

New York resident, GoldLink, clearly has an ear for idiosyncratic producers. Though he is completely capable of holding his own, collaborating with new and progressive producers allows him to stick out in two huge arenas: hip-hop & EDM.

Kaytranada, Chet Faker, Sango and Lindsay Lowend are a few big acts that have panned for Gold, finding the missing link that added a bit of sparkle to their already established and unique style. Pairing up with LA-based Falcons on today’s number, GoldLink delivers an ultra cool and effortless flow to Falcons’ tripped-out space bounce in “Vroom,” delivering the perfect blend of East & West Coast swag.

Revisiting Lucidity's Pre-Party 2/20

February 24, 2015
Post Image

Music Is Love just threw an epic pre-party at SOhO  this past weekend in anticipation and celebration of this year’s Lucidity Festival, “Kindred Quest”. Friday’s celebration featured Lucidity 2015’s acts Slothy, PEGA5U5, and Thriftworks as well as cultivated and live art from Branches Mobile Gallery, vendor goodies from Radhas Love Designs and Free Feather Photography & Creations, and an extra special healing station courtesy of I AM Healing.

Between the great energy, inviting and festive atmosphere, inspiring artwork, vibrant attendees and top-notch musical performances, Lucidity’s pre-party made us even more excited for this year’s festival to arrive.

A special thanks is given to local talent and Lucidity act Slothy, as well as Bay Area artists, PEGA5U5 and Thriftworks for providing our colorful celebration with the perfect soundtrack. California based electronic producer, Thriftworks, delivered his own fresh, outsider style while weaving explosive bass throughout his unique, deep low-end set. The two Northern California brothers of PEGA5U5 showcased their many genres influences while performing in a psychedelic, slick, and groovy set. And all three of the night’s Lucidity performers all managed to showcase sets that highlighted their noteworthy talent and uniqueness.

Check out some of the pictures from the Lucidity’s “Kindred Quest” Pre-Party below (full album HERE) and grab tickets for this year’s Lucidity Festival: Kindred Quest here!

Josh Pan Is Really 20 People

February 24, 2015

I don’t know how King Kanye feels about remixes of his tracks; if he made them they are already perfect, right? West’s all-star attitude at the Grammys definitely served it’s purpose in creating a new, but all-too-familiar, buzz around him.

A newly reveled collective of 20 artists that go by the name of “Josh Pan” fans the flame by flattering Kanye’s top-40 hit, “Touch The Sky,” reintroducing the jazzy original as a bass motivated slapper.

Josh Pan as a collective only recently developed as he announced via twitter that his suggesting title and coy marketing had successfully deceived everyone into thinking there was one guy blasting out track, after track, tweeting, “We just want to thank you all for being apart of this social experiment”- juicy! Some producers who contribute to Josh Pan Collective are Harrison, Luca Lush, Madeaux, POLO, Cavalier, Whispa, Dirty Chocolate, Jai Wolf, Yung Bae, Y2K, Flamingosis, and Manila Killa.

Morning, afternoon, and evening, we absolutely love us some French Kiwi Juice, and after hearing his delicious mix for Cirque Du Soul, we thought we’d all take a second to remember his sexy release from 2012, “Lying Together.”

Based in . . . well, France, and better known by his acronym, FKJ, Vincent Fenton provides a sound that caters to a broad spectrum of music listeners by blurring decades of distinct style. Whether you are typically a fan of electronic music or not, there really is’t anything not to enjoy from our funky Frenchman. Integrating sexy guitar rifts and electronic keyboards with the smoothes samples you will ever hear, FKJ takes a special approach to producing and is not afraid to draw inspiration from decades long past, but never forgotten.
