100 Stacks: "Essential Music For The Midnight Minded"

May 4, 2015
Post Image

Over the course of last month, Lucidity Festival 2015 artist and up-and-coming NorCal trapstar, Shlump, leaked one free beat a week from his forthcoming EP, 100 Stacks. With the release of its final track, “123,” just last week, 100 Stacks is now a fully released, 4-track hitter from the budding bass artist.

Exploring his more tribal, experimental taste, 100 Stacks proves to be one of Shlump’s most diverse low-end, bass explorations to date. While lacing the EP with his bubbly, quacky watermarks, Shlump made sure that each track had it’s own personality. From the dubstep influenced filth of the track “Unstoppable,” to the dance hall riddem anthem, “123,” to the EP’s booty shaking title track, 100 Stacks demonstrates Shlumpas one of California’s most forward-thinking and influential trap and bass producers.

Listen to Shlump’s traptastic 100 Stacks EP and grab it for free below!

Sherlock [Promo Mix 015]

May 1, 2015
Post Image
Moving to Bordeaux, France, in the pursuit of furthering his education, Sam Bassett AKA Sherlock, emits a fresh energy and bass-y buzz into the EDM wave that has taken over the world. For an artist fully inspired by his environment, a move proved to be a source of inspiration for the young creative, mentioning,  “I would really love to try producing in the great outdoors one day, like on a treehouse or on top of a mountain, I think it would really broaden my horizons.”

Only tapping into producing three years ago, Sherlock quickly discovered the sound he needed to stand out in a stream of artists seemingly stuck in a rut replicating each other. For every one standout and innovative producer, there are about 100 more trying to replicate his/her style- Sherlock is a case of the former, an artist who is truly pushing the bounds of creativity with a truly novel style.Entering the scene with what he would define as a progression of “gritty [and] dark grime, to weird house stuff;” today Sherlock’s brainchild is a sound that we both have difficulty placing. The most obvious “future bass” denotation is favored, but hearing his music you realize there is much more. Bassett’s style is cooly calculated and elaborate, even within his mix, his tracks completely stand out in the best way possible. Super dreamy and wavy, Sherlock utilizes avant-garde artists to compliment his new age bass and capricious synth work, often taking the listener for an unexpected, but fully welcome, turn.

Sherlock’s exclusive mix for Music is Love carries a licentious energy you’ll want to maintain for hours after listening.

Our Kinda Haze

We be keepin’ it super steamy, Jack and Rose style, with LA-based singer/producer Zacari Pacaldo and his initial release, “Foggy Windows.”

As far as we can see, Zacari is relatively new to the music scene, releasing his first track less than a week ago. The newbie links up with two producers for to pop his SoundCloud cherry: fellow youngin’ and LA resident, J-Louis, and LA local and producing veteran, NGHTMRE. J-Louis’ heavy R&B influence paired with NGHTMRE’s in-your-face style leaves us with some funky-ass production for Zacari’s swingin’ vocals.

Denver-based electro funk aficionado, Michal Menert, just released his third, highly anticipated, full-length album entitled Space Jazz. Although Menert has already staked his musical claim in the soul and hip-hop arena, his new LP is a standing testament to his musical versatility and ability to seamlessly incorporate a variety of musical influences under one original sound. With no regard to customs or trends, Michal Menert’s Space Jazz opens up a realm of new possibilities for electronic fans as it cannot be classified under a concrete genre or style.

As a key player in the world of soulful electro, Menert diverges from, yet simultaneously plays off of his roots for this newest release, mostly due to the fact that he has recently been performing with over a dozen collaborators and musicians, collectively called the “Big Band.” This “Big Band” is a new creative musical outlet for Menert and its influence is strongly heard throughout Space Jazz. With a total of twelve different collaborators, ranging from Dominic Lalli of Big Gigantic, Borham Lee of Break Science, and Manic Focus, Space Jazz boasts live drums, fusion jazz with synthesizers, hip-hop, soul, blues, and electronic influences.

From its spacey and washed-out tracks, to its wide range of styles, Space Jazz utilizes a span of musical perspectives and musical creativity to convey a style that is gentle, deep and soulful. A truly innovative, fresh, funky, and forward-thinking release from one of electronic music’s best!

It's Not A 9 to 5

Nor Cal’s most promising, low-end bass master, G Jones, just released a huge remix of Footsie’s grime track, “Work All Day.” As one of UK grime duo, Newham Generals’, members, Footsie, has become an established and prominent name in the scene as one of its most influential veterans. What do you get when you take the natural filth of Footsie’s in-your-face grime and fuse it together with G Jones’s trailblazing, future-bass prowess? One of Jones’s most attitude-packed releases yet.

Making its thunderous first appearance on his new beats 2015 mix back in January, G Jones’s “Work All Day” remix proves to be the future-trap anthem for the hardest working dreamers among us. Jones’ utilizes the genius of Footsie’s original verses, delivering his rendition with a spacious, bass heavy, slimy, grimey twist. From an introduction void of anything but claps paired with grime rap, to a progression that oozes swag. “Work All Day” provides us with enough fuel to keep our heads bobbing.

Listen to G Jones “put in work” with his remix of Footsie’s “Work All Day” and grab it for free download below.

You Can't Spell Delusion Without "us"

April 23, 2015
Post Image

Just what we need ATM: peppy future bass to lighten up what feels like has been a 14-day week.

Currently downloading whatever we can get our hands on by Delusion for the simple reason that his music makes us feel really good.

“Between Us,” is just one of many sweet treats Delusion releases that are not only free, but so easy to listen to. The original by Elènne is fantastic, but Delusion adds a little bit more life into the tune, emulating a Soulection-type of sound that we absolutely love.

All three artists contribute something special to making this track what it is- a post-worthy gem. If it’s not Mothica’s sexy and confident vocals that mesh perfectly with that pristine future soul sound, it’s Delusion’s garage influence and re-fix of Elènne’s well orchestrated synth work that will make you press “repeat.”

Encouraging and condoning any and all Delusional behavior today, especially when it sounds like this:[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/200022967″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

Drawpit Like It's Hot

April 21, 2015

Tropical disco feels coming to the West Coast from Waterloo, Canada. Now is the best time to begin downloading heaps of nu disco for the approaching summer. If there is any specific genre that reminds us of summer, it’s tropical nu disco.

Real talk: what’s better than sipping on juice with a crazy straw listening to disco house under the sun? Absolutely nothing. If you joined us for The Cool-Off last October, you know we like to keep summer lasting as long as possible with a sound that  not only matches our favorite season, but helps maintain it.

Eighteen year-old Julius Q AKA Shagabond, keeps it hot all year long despite the chilly Canadian weather with his take on Snoop Dogg X Pharell’s instant hit, “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” entitled “Drawpit.” Shagabond produces a subtle 4×4 platform around the well-known early ’00 sample with delicate synth work that makes you feel all sorts of wavy.

Check out Shagabond’s vibey electronic rendition of “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and fall back in love with a modern classic:

Funky Punk

What a wonderful Lucidity! Beautiful weather, beautiful people . . . such is Santa Barbara every single day. We hope you are almost fully recovered from dancing in the dust all weekend, and if you aren’t, you have another week to get those legs in check before we see you all again at our Dirtybird take over alumni weekend!

Not even trying to front, we already miss Lucidity, like, a lot. Let’s take a second and reminisce with a track from a favorite artist last weekend, Defunk.

If you were unable to make it to the main stage Saturday at 11PM, condolences to you. Canadian producer / DJ, DeFunk took the sea of dancers by the hips for a little bump n’ grind, working the crowd with the funkiest glitched-out hip-hop tracks. Taking a glance around mid-groove, everyone was not only dancing, but there were stuck in an ear-to-ear smile, seemingly unable to be still.

Give a funk all weekend long with a free download of Defunk’s “Harder Faster” originally by funk pioneers, Daft Punk and keep it groovy AF.

Lucidity Countdown 2015: Week 4 – Doug English

April 3, 2015
Post Image

It’s here. The final week counting down to hula-hooping babes, vibrating bass music, house heads bopping around Nomads’, yoga wherever and whenever, celestial and unworldly light installations, beefy speakers releasing pristine sound, strangers that become your friends, and strangers that become your lovers. Lucidity 2015, we love you already and we can’t want to play with you!

Rounding up our 4-part series is house producer, Doug English. Seemingly coming out of nowhere, our first listen was initiated with Doug’s Hood Life EP release via flourishing house label, Perfect Driver, early in 2014. Since then, English has rapidly become recognized for his booty-tech style influenced deeply from Detroit’s decades-standing house scene. Clearly we weren’t the only ones digging Dougie’s sound as it appeared to be a DirtyBird favorite to DJ all last summer, boosting English’s credibility as one of deep house’s newest and hottest underground producers. Though still working through his early 20s, his age is anything but a factor as Doug’s ear for music seems to surpass what is generally appreciated during his age. Complimenting the minimal quality of tech and deep house, the early 20-something superstar DJ/producer pulls classic inspiration from the windy music city’s funky Motown roots, livening up his production and sets with some serious soul.

If Doug’s music was personified, it would be well-groomed, dressed in all black, and the coolest catch at the party. English’s style evokes an air of house snobbery that we can totally get down with. You want to dance with your pinky up in the air and your booty bouncing off the ground? Awesome, we love it.

With plans to release a new EP through Brazilian-based house label, Grooverdose Records, this summer looks as promising as the last for an Englishman in Detroit.

Love what you hear? So do we. We will see you at Doug English’s set at the Nomads’ Stage, Saturday night at 7:30, for Lucidity Festival 2015, Kindred Quest. Last minute tickets? Grab ’em here.
